Capacity crowds totalling almost 20,000 fans revelled in championship-winning glory across the Melbourne & Olympic Parks (M&OP) precinct over the weekend, with Melbourne United and Melbourne City triumphant in their respective Grand Finals.
With both teams having finished their regular seasons as ladder-leaders, United claimed an NBL Grand Final series clean-sweep over the Perth Wildcats at John Cain Arena on Friday night, while Melbourne City defeated reigning-champions Sydney FC at AAMI Park on Sunday evening.
Patrick Flannigan, Chair of the Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust, praised both M&OP home teams on their remarkable seasons.
“Having navigated the complexities of COVID-affected seasons, the players, staff and volunteers of both Melbourne United and Melbourne City must be congratulated on their Grand Final wins,” he said.
“From hubs, to rolling fixture changes, to games without crowds, both teams embodied the very definition of being flexible, nimble and resilient, and as a precinct, we are extremely proud of both organisations.”
As a result of United and City’s triumph, our M&OP precinct is now home to five current champions across the major Australian sporting codes, including:
- NRL – Melbourne Storm (2020)
- Super Netball – Melbourne Vixens (2020)
- W-League – Melbourne Victory (2021)
- A-League – Melbourne City (2021)
- NBL – Melbourne United (2021)
